Preparing for your first safari in Sri Lanka? While you don’t need to go out and buy a completely new wardrobe, dressing correctly will make you much more comfortable and actually improve your wildlife sightings.
Here is exactly what you should wear (and what you should avoid) on a safari in Minneriya, Kaudulla, or Hurulu Eco Park.
The Rules of Safari Clothing
1. Blend In (Neutral Colors)
The most important rule of safari attire is to wear neutral colors. Think khaki, olive green, beige, and brown. Why? Bright colors—especially white, red, and neon—stand out sharply against the natural environment. This can startle the elephants and other wildlife, causing them to move away from the jeep.
2. Prepare for the Heat
Sigiriya is in the dry zone of Sri Lanka, and afternoons can get very hot. Wear lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.
3. Protect Yourself from the Sun
Our safari jeeps have roofs that provide shade, but the sides are completely open for better viewing.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat (make sure it fits tightly, as it can get windy in the jeep).
- Bring polarized sunglasses to cut the glare off the lakes.
- Apply plenty of sunscreen before you leave the hotel.
What to Avoid
- White clothing: The tracks in the national parks are made of red dirt. Within 10 minutes, your white shirt will be covered in fine red dust that is very difficult to wash out.
- Heavy hiking boots: You will be sitting in a jeep for the entire 3 to 4 hours. You are not allowed to walk in the park. Comfortable sneakers, sandals, or even flip-flops are perfectly fine.
