The answer changes every month. Here is how we track the herds across Minneriya, Kaudulla, and Hurulu to find you the best sighting.
The Sri Lankan Elephant Migration
The "best time" to see elephants near Sigiriya depends entirely on when you are visiting. The herds migrate between three adjacent parks—Minneriya, Kaudulla, and Hurulu Eco Park—chasing receding water levels and fresh grass.
While seasons can shift based on annual rainfall, here is the approximate pattern we use to track the herds:

| June to September | Minneriya National Park | The famous "Gathering." The lake recedes, leaving lush grass. 150-300+ elephants. Peaks in August. |
| October to November | Kaudulla National Park | Monsoon rains fill Minneriya, so the herds migrate here. Fantastic sightings, though tracks can be muddy. |
| November to March | Hurulu Eco Park | The heavy wet season fallback. Dense forest tracking. Usually 50-150 elephants. |
| April to May | Minneriya or Kaudulla | Transitional months. Herds are smaller and spread out. We check water levels daily to decide. |

How We Decide Where to Go
Unlike large tour operators that sell a fixed ticket to "Minneriya," we sell a "Sigiriya Safari." This gives us the flexibility to pivot.
Our trackers are in the parks every single day. If you book with us, we will contact you the week of your arrival to recommend the park with the highest activity. We never take guests to an empty park just because it's printed on a brochure.
