When is the best time to see the elephant gathering in Sri Lanka?
The best time to see the Elephant Gathering is from June to September, peaking in August at Minneriya National Park. However, large herds can be seen year-round by visiting Kaudulla in October-November, and Hurulu Eco Park from December to March.
Minneriya or Kaudulla: which safari is better?
Neither park is strictly 'better'—it depends entirely on the month you visit. Choose Minneriya from June to September, and Kaudulla from October to November based on where the water and elephants are.
Is a safari from Sigiriya worth it?
Yes, a safari from Sigiriya is absolutely worth it, as it offers the highest concentration of Asian elephants in the world. It is one of the few places globally where you can guarantee seeing wild elephants on almost every game drive.
How much does a Minneriya safari cost?
A private Minneriya safari typically costs around $45 to $60 USD per person, which includes the jeep, driver/guide, and park entrance fees. Prices vary slightly based on group size and exact pickup locations.
Are elephant safaris in Sri Lanka ethical?
Elephant safaris in Sri Lanka can be ethical if you choose the right operator. At Hasthi Trails Sigiriya, we follow a strict ethical pledge: we maintain a 20-meter distance, never chase or crowd the herds, and turn our engines off during sightings.
Can I do a safari and Sigiriya Rock in one day?
Yes, you can easily climb Sigiriya Rock in the morning and do a safari in the afternoon. We recommend starting the rock climb at 6:30 AM, having lunch, and getting picked up for your safari around 1:30 PM.
Do we need to book the safari in advance?
Yes, we highly recommend booking at least a few days in advance during the peak seasons (July-August and December-January) to secure a private jeep and our best naturalist guides.
What is the difference between a shared and private safari?
A private safari gives you an exclusive jeep for your group with a dedicated guide, allowing you to go at your own pace. Shared safaris pack up to 6 strangers in a jeep, meaning you have no control over how long you stay at a sighting.
