Minneriya Elephant Safari

Minneriya National Park is world-renowned for the “Elephant Gathering” — the largest assembly of Asian elephants on Earth. During the dry season (typically June to September), up to 300 elephants emerge from the forest to drink, feed, and socialize on the grassy plains of the receding Minneriya reservoir.

What You’ll See

Beyond the massive herds of elephants, Minneriya is rich in biodiversity. You can expect to spot:

• Sambar deer and spotted deer
• Toque macaques and purple-faced langurs
• Sloth bears and the occasional leopard (rare but possible!)
• Over 160 species of birds, including painted storks, great pelicans, and the Sri Lankan junglefowl.

Itinerary

• 13:30 - Pickup from your hotel in Sigiriya, Dambulla, or Habarana.
• 14:00 - Arrive at the park gate, handle ticketing, and begin the safari.
• 14:30 - 17:30 - Explore the park. We track the herds, allowing plenty of time for observation and photography without rushing or crowding the animals.
• 18:00 - Drop-off back at your hotel.

A Note from Our Guides

“The Gathering at Minneriya is spectacular, but we always check water levels first. If the lake is too high, the elephants might have moved to Kaudulla. We will always tell you honestly where the best sighting is on the day of your safari.”
