How We Operate Differently
The sad reality of wildlife tourism in Sri Lanka is that many operators prioritize getting close over acting responsibly. We take a different approach. Every guide at Hasthi Trails Sigiriya signs a strict code of conduct.
1. We Keep Our Distance
We maintain a strict minimum distance of 20 meters from elephants. If an elephant decides to approach the jeep on its own terms, we turn off the engine and remain completely silent.
2. We Never Crowd
If there are already several jeeps surrounding a sighting, we will not join them. We prefer to wait or track another herd. The animals must never feel boxed in or stressed.
3. We Turn the Engine Off
When observing wildlife, we switch off the engine. This reduces noise pollution, lowers stress for the animals, and—as a bonus for you—eliminates vibration for photography.
4. No Chasing
If an animal is moving away into the forest, we let it go. We do not drive off-road to chase it, and we do not rev the engine to get its attention.
