The single most common question we get asked is: “Should I go to Minneriya, Kaudulla, or Hurulu Eco Park?”
The honest answer is that it depends on the month you visit and the current water levels. Elephants migrate between these three adjacent parks throughout the year in search of food and water. Booking a fixed park months in advance is a mistake.
Here is how the parks compare and how we choose the best one for you.
1. Minneriya National Park (The Famous One)
Minneriya is home to the world-famous “Elephant Gathering.”
- Best time to visit: June to September (Peaks in August).
- The Experience: When the dry season hits, the water in the Minneriya tank recedes, leaving behind lush green grass. Elephants from across the region gather here by the hundreds. It’s spectacular open-plains viewing.
- The Downside: Because it is famous, it can get crowded with jeeps in August.
2. Kaudulla National Park (The October Refuge)
Kaudulla is a critical elephant corridor and the sister park to Minneriya.
- Best time to visit: October to November.
- The Experience: When the monsoon rains arrive and Minneriya tank fills up, the grass is submerged. The herds migrate to Kaudulla. If you visit in October or November, Kaudulla is almost always the right choice.
- The Downside: Subject to heavy rains, tracks can sometimes get muddy.
3. Hurulu Eco Park (The Wet Season Hero)
Hurulu is a different ecosystem entirely, characterized by dense forest.
- Best time to visit: November to March.
- The Experience: When the heavy rains of the Northeast Monsoon flood both Minneriya and Kaudulla, the elephants retreat to the higher ground and dense forests of Hurulu Eco Park. Tracking them here is a true jungle experience.
- The Downside: The dense forest means you won’t get those sweeping panoramic shots of 200 elephants at once, but the close-up encounters in the trees are thrilling.
