The “Elephant Gathering” at Minneriya National Park is often cited as one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the world. But when exactly should you visit to see it at its peak?
What is The Gathering?
During the dry season in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, the smaller waterholes in the forest dry up. The elephants, needing up to 100 liters of water a day, migrate to the large, ancient man-made reservoirs (tanks). The Minneriya tank, built in the 3rd century AD, never completely dries up. As the water recedes, it leaves behind a massive plain of sweet, fresh grass.
Elephants from across the region converge here to eat, drink, mate, and socialize.
The Best Months to Visit
- June & July: The gathering begins. You will start seeing herds of 50 to 100 elephants.
- August & September (The Peak): This is the absolute best time to see the Gathering. It is not uncommon to see 300+ elephants spread across the grass on a single afternoon.
- October & November: The monsoon rains arrive. Minneriya tank fills up quickly, covering the grass. The herds disperse and move to nearby Kaudulla National Park.
Morning vs. Afternoon
The Gathering is an afternoon phenomenon. During the heat of the morning, the elephants retreat into the surrounding jungle for shade. Around 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, they begin to slowly emerge from the tree line and make their way down to the water. By 4:30 PM, the plains are covered in them.
Therefore, you should always book an afternoon safari if your goal is to see the Gathering.
